Domestic containers are containers primarily used by the rail inside the United States. While the smallest (45') are used for international shipping, they provide an alternative to standard international shipping containers. In general, they are uncommon and only available sporadically in selected cities.
Domestic containers vary between 8' and 8'6" wide and are all 9'6" high, depending on the age of the container. The majority are 8'6" wide and 9'6" high.
Domestic containers are not as plentiful as international containers and are not available in all markets at all times. The rail lines have been switching their inventory to 53' containers, but used 53' containers are extremely difficult to come by.
